Enrique González Bernal Heights Residence - SB Architects

The objective of this project was to use the unique opportunity to build a dwelling place in desired, but never developed into a dense neighborhood corner of San Francisco.

The design concept was guided by the characteristics of "micro" of the land and the desire to create an expression of contemporary design that had its roots in Northern California architecture and sustainable ideals.

The basic envelope was shaped largely by the design code of the neighborhood, which issued the outstanding items such as windows, side yards, and incoming volume and shadow to create movement on the street. While the design is based on the local vernacular code within this traditional neighborhood of San Francisco, the interpretation is clearly and distinctly modern.

natural terrain slopes inspired the idea of \u200b\u200ba stairwell to the private areas and finish in the top with a dramatic skylight, bathing the interior with natural light and forming a direct connection between private spaces in the level of access and public levels in the upper level.

The core of stairs also creates a strong vertical wall on the outside, resulting in a completely different composition than the typical horizontal layers of living spaces. The corner location and internal layout of the spaces make an outward expression that breaks above the horizontal to create a mix of vertical and horizontal lines, accentuated by a strong roof overhang.

Locating the main living spaces on the top floor, facing the spectacular views of San Francisco and you get plenty of natural light, significantly reducing electricity usage. The windows in all aspects of the building (something unusual for this type of urban fabric), provide abundant natural light to interior spaces.

Using extensive experience in interior design, the design team created an experience based on the style of "resort" in this house of 195 m2, with open spaces, fluid, clean, with elegant finishes and wood.
A rainscreen system supports Ipe strips in the exterior, while the floors and walnut cabinets, combined with cedar siding on the interior heaven and outdoors to add warmth.

Designed with a careful focus on sustainability, this home is certified Energy Star Two Tier, making 35% more efficient than California Title 24 requirements. A gas boiler with 95% efficiency provides hot water and heating, and a delivery system 2.5kw photovoltaic solar energy, as well as systems for efficient water use and other resources.
