This housing located in Iowa City was built in 1941 and then expanded several times over the decades, being a solid complex of enclosures without a general idea of \u200b\u200borganization.
The house was a compelling feature, a huge field in an established neighborhood surrounded by mature trees. The desire to liberate and to organize the interior spaces and connected to this landscape was the central theme that guided the renovation of this house.
The designers used a series of transformation tactics to simplify and expand the house. The main form was expanded vertically (to increase the slope of the roof) and extruded northward to increase the volume of the house within the existing foundations. The existing windows were replaced and rhythm extends throughout the project to order the fenestration of the house.
The result is a "form of home " simple, almost archetypal. This volume is expanded with a series of terraces that provide transitional spaces between the inerior and abroad, as well as sun protection for new windows. These terraces , in turn, frame the exterior spaces around the house .
The interior is similarly direct. The first level of the house becomes a single volume, white and open to a black mass of service spaces, located outside the center. This mass subtly define the living spaces of the first level. At the second level, the rooms become in a playroom surrounded by additional habiaciones.
Throughout the project, efforts were focused on creating a cohesive whole with a sense of openness outside the rooms of the existing house phones.
